1. Tác nhân
Bệnh do vi khuẩn P. mallei (hoặc B. mallei) xâm nhập vào cơ thể súc vật chủ yếu qua thức ăn và nước uống bị ô nhiễm. Sau khi vào cơ thể, vi khuẩn đi vào niêm mạc miệng, vào hạch hầu, rồi vào máu hoặc xuyên qua niêm mạc ruột vào hạch ruột, từ đó vào máu.
Máu đem vi khuẩn đến các nội tạng của súc vật gây ra thể bệnh toàn thân sốt cao 40 – 41℃, ăn ít hoặc bỏ ăn, thở khó. Cuối cùng, vi khuẩn tác động đến các cơ quan hô hấp: Mũi, phế quản, phổi hoặc ngoài da.
Cần tăng cường thực hiện các biện pháp vệ sinh thú ý trong cơ sở nuôi ngựa.
2. Triệu chứng
Căn cứ vào các vị trí gây bệnh và biến đổi bệnh lý mà người ta chia ra 5 thể bệnh sau đây:
Thể cấp tính: Thường gặp ở lừa, ngựa với thời gian nung bệnh rất ngắn, 2 – 4 ngày và bệnh diễn biến 2 – 3 ngày. Súc vật bị bệnh thể hiện: Viêm mũi chảy dịch màu xanh vàng hoặc chảy dịch có lẫn máu. Viêm mũi tiến triển rất nhanh với sự hình thành màng giả trong xoang mũi, nổi các cục nhỏ, các áp xe, các nốt loét trên niêm mạc mũi. Hạch lâm ba vùng mũi sưng to cả 2 bên thành các ổ áp xe mủ rồi vỡ ra qua cả lớp da bên ngoài.
Thể mãn tính: Thường xảy ra ở ngựa và kéo dài hàng năm, đôi khi các biểu hiện lâm sàng không rõ ràng. Bệnh chỉ được phát hiện khi làm phản ứng Mallein hoặc các phương pháp chẩn đoán miễn dịch. Ngựa bệnh thể hiện: Sốt cao gián đoạn hoặc sốt không theo một quy luật nào, nhịp thở tăng, khớp chân bị sưng, viêm hạch lâm ba mãn tính và giảm trọng lượng, gầy yếu.
Thể mũi: Luôn bắt đầu là viêm mũi với hình ảnh 2 lỗ mũi đầy ắp dịch nhầy xanh vàng, trong đó có những đám tổ chức hoại tử và rớm máu. Khi ho hoặc khịt mũi, thấy ngựa bị bệnh thường chảy ra từng đám lớn dịch nhầy từ lỗ mũi.
Các nốt vàng xám vỡ loét ra và các áp xe mủ xuất hiện trên niêm mạc mũi. Các nốt loét có bờ này rộng dần tạo ra các ổ loét lớn. Nếu nốt loét được hồi phục sẽ để lại vết sẹo trên niêm mạc mũi và vách ngăn 2 lỗ mũi. Cánh mũi và môi của con vật bị bệnh cũng hình thành sưng thũng, có nốt loét. Ở thể cấp tính hoặc mãn tính đều thấy hạch lâm ba ở vùng có nốt loét bị viêm. Những nốt loét này cũng thấy ở trên da, dầy lên, màu vàng và chảy dịch.
Thể phổi: Thường phát triển chậm trong khoảng thời gian vài tháng. Ngựa bệnh giảm tăng trọng, thở khó tăng dần, ho và có thể hình thành tiếng khò khè nếu như thanh quản bị viêm. Sau đó, bệnh tích xuất hiện ở vùng quanh mũi và da.
Thể da: Còn gọi là bệnh “Farcy”, đặc thù bởi rất nhiều mụn có kích thước
1 – 3 cm đường kính ở trên da, thường thấy ở chân, ngực và bụng. Các đám mụn sẽ vỡ loét, chảy dịch ở trên mặt da, tạo ra các ổ loét trở thành mãn tính, hình thành các cục ở trên da. Các mụn và nốt loét khác cũng xuất hiện quanh vùng hạch lâm ba tạo ra các bệnh tích giống như viêm hạch lâm ba truyền nhiễm. Ở quanh vùng có nốt loét, tổ chức dưới da bị sưng thũng, rộng và rộng ra ở chân, đặc biệt ở chân sau.
3. Chẩn đoán
Mổ khám vật bệnh thấy: Viêm hạch lâm ba cấp hoặc mãn tính ở vùng có các đám mụn loét, áp xe lan rộng ra, xung quanh có fibrin. Những bệnh tích này cũng thấy ở một số nội tạng như: Bộ máy hô hấp, cơ quan tiêu hóa gan, lách và dịch hoàn.

4. Điều trị
Hiện nay, bệnh tỵ thư ở ngựa không cho phép điều trị mà ngựa mắc bệnh phải bị tiêu hủy luôn và chôn sâu có chất sát trùng, bởi vì việc điều trị sẽ rất nguy hiểm, mầm bệnh có thể lây sang ngựa khỏe và lây sang người.
5. Phòng bệnh
Ở các vùng dịch tễ có lưu hành bệnh tỵ thư, phải kiểm tra đàn ngựa bằng phản ứng Mallein theo định kỳ 2 lần/năm. Ngựa mang trùng và ẩn tính đều phải xử lý theo quy định (tiêu diệt). Khi xuất nhập khẩu ngựa cần kiểm tra nghiêm ngặt đàn ngựa bằng phản ứng Mallein để loại bỏ ngựa bệnh và mang trùng. Thực hiện các biện pháp vệ sinh thú y trong cơ sở nuôi ngựa, lừa.
