Veterinarians Without Borders (VWB, led by Kim Jae-young) conducted overseas veterinary volunteer activities in Hanoi, Vietnam, from October 6th (Friday) to 9th (Monday). This was the second overseas volunteer effort by Veterinarians Without Borders following one in Laos last February. Since its official launch in March 2021, Veterinarians Without Borders has been engaged in various activities including veterinary medical volunteer work at animal shelters, care for animals in medically underserved areas such as islands and rural regions, Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) for stray cats, neutering surgeries for yard dogs (rural dogs), proposing animal welfare policies, and overseas veterinary medical volunteer work including efforts to eradicate rabies, a zoonotic disease. During this volunteer activity, 39 participants including veterinarians, veterinary students, and lay volunteers took part. They performed neutering surgeries, rabies vaccinations, and various infectious disease tests on 155 dogs and cats in the Hanoi area. They also visited shelters for animals with disabilities to provide vaccinations and infectious disease testing, and directly visited small farms and horse stables to conduct tick removal, Brucella and Rotavirus testing, and treatments for skin diseases and diarrhea. This volunteer activity was actively supported by Samyang Anipharm’s Vietnam branch (led by HAI HA). Samyang Anipharm operates and supports a total of five animal clinics (SAMYANG ANIMAL CLINIC) in Vietnam. BIONOTE also supported the medical team by providing various diagnostic kits. BIONOTE’s products, including simultaneous diagnostic kits for canine parvovirus, coronavirus, and giardia antigens, canine distemper antigen diagnostic kits, a five-type diagnostic kit for calf diarrhea, and bovine brucellosis antibody diagnostic kits, were used for diagnosis. A BIONOTE representative stated, “We will continue to support Veterinarians Without Borders, which is actively engaged in domestic and international veterinary volunteer work and constantly striving to improve public health, so that they can continue to bear good fruit in the future.” Green Cross Veterinary Products sponsored comprehensive vaccines ‘Gibac DHPP’, a long-acting broad-spectrum antibiotic ‘Duravet 25’, and an external parasite remedy ‘Spotline’. The sponsored medicines were used for neutering surgeries, treatments, and vaccinations of animals in shelters. During the volunteer period, Veterinarians Without Borders appointed veterinarian Bang In-jun as the head of the Vietnam branch. Branch head Bang In-jun said, “I felt a lot seeing the volunteer work of the veterinarians, veterinary students, and civilian volunteers who participated in the service,” and expressed his gratitude to Kim Jae-young, the president of Veterinarians Without Borders, and others involved with the organization, Samyang Anipharm’s Vietnam branch for taking on the practical preparations for the service, and the teachers who helped with interpretation. During this service, Hyunwoo Lee, the representative of Jjinkone Shelter, and eight local university students were responsible for the interpretation, and the Vietnamese students even studied medical terminology in advance for smooth interpretation. In addition to medical support for animals, Veterinarians Without Borders also conducted lectures for local veterinarians and students during this service. Professor Lee In-hyung from Seoul National University College of Veterinary Medicine and Kim Jeong-nam, the head of the surgery team, gave lectures on anesthesia and fractures, respectively, at the Vietnam National University of Agriculture-Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (VNUA-FVM). About 200 people attended the special lecture, expressing gratitude for the high-quality education provided by Korean veterinarians. It was a moment to feel the status of K-veterinary medicine. Students from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine – Vietnam National University of Agriculture also directly participated in this volunteer activity, supporting the Veterinarians Without Borders volunteer team. Veterinarians Without Borders plans to continue combining academic exchange and clinical education with veterinary medical support when conducting overseas volunteer work in the future.
