Do nhu cầu sử dụng sữa bò và các sản phẩm từ sữa bò ngày càng tăng cao kéo theo mô hình chăn nuôi bò sữa cũng nở rộ trên khắp cả nước. Đây là một dấu hiệu đáng mừng cho bà con chăn nuôi ngành chăn nuôi bò sữa. Nhưng việc chăm sóc bò sữa nói chung và việc cân nhắc khẩu phần dinh dưỡng ra sao cho bò sữa luôn là nỗi lo cho người chăn nuôi, vì với nhu cầu mục đích rất khác nhau giữa chăn bò cho thịt và bò cho sữa mà khẩu phần dinh dưỡng của 2 loại hình chăn nuôi này rất khác nhau. Thức ăn cho bò sữa được chia thành 3 nhóm chính: Thức ăn thô, thức ăn tinh và thức ăn bổ sung.
Thức ăn thô hay thức ăn xanh bao gồm: cỏ tự nhiên, cỏ trồng, ngọn mía,…; thức ăn ủ chua được tạo ra thông qua phương pháp ủ chua; rơm lúa, cỏ khô; phế phụ phẩm công nghiệp chế biến như bã lạc, bã đậu, rỉ mật…) Bò là động vật nhai lại nên thức ăn chủ yếu là cỏ, thức ăn thô được đưa vào dạ cỏ đảm bảo cho bò no hàng ngày và làm cho chức năng của dạ cỏ hoạt động bình thường, làm tăng tỷ lệ bơ trong sữa.

- Kỹ thuật chăn nuôi
Trung bình một ngày bò sữa ăn từ 20 đến 40 kg rơm và từ 2 đến 4 kg thức ăn dạng tinh bột. Ngoài ra, cần cung cấp thêm các loại thức ăn sau cho bò có năng suất sữa cao hơn như sau:
Với thức ăn ủ chua: Chỉ cho bò sữa ăn sau khi vắt sữa để tránh cho sữa có mùi cỏ
Bã bia: Không cho bò ăn quá 15kg mỗi ngày, cho ăn nhiều bã mía sẽ làm giảm tỷ lệ tiêu hóa chất xơ và chất lượng sữa.
Rỉ mật đường: Trung bình mỗi con chỉ cho ăn từ 1kg đến 2kg mỗi ngày. Vì rỉ mật nhuận tràng cho bò ăn nhiều dễ dẫn đến tiêu chảy.
Bã đậu nành sống: Khi sử dụng chung với các loại thức ăn có chứa Ure thì phải chia nhỏ lượng bã đậu lành ra. Vì trong bã đậu nành có men phân giải ure, kết hợp cùng lúc 2 loại thức ăn này với số lượng lớn, ure sẽ bị phân giải nhanh dễ gây ra ngộ độc cho bò sữa.
Bà con có thể thay thế một số loại thức ăn khác cho khẩu phần ăn của bò thêm phong phú hơn, một số gợi ý tới bà con như sau:
1kg thức ăn tinh = 4 kg bã bia
1kg cám gạo = 1 kg cám mì
1 kg rỉ mật = 1 kg bột sắn
30 kg cỏ tự nhiên = 30 kg cây ngô ủ chua = 30 kg cây ngô xanh ngay sau khi thu hoạch
30 kg cỏ tự nhiên = 20 kg cỏ tự nhiên + 1,5 kg rơm
30 kg cỏ tự nhiên = 30 kg ngô non + 1kg rỉ mật
- Ứng dụng máy móc vào chăn nuôi
Sau khi đã xây dựng khẩu phần cho bò sữa bà con tiến hành bước tiếp theo là sơ chế thức ăn. Trước đây khi chưa có máy móc bà con thường tự băm cỏ bằng tay rồi trộn cám, đây là công đoạn vất vả và tốn nhiều công nhất, vừa tốn thời gian mà năng suất hiệu quả kém.Ứng dụng máy móc vào chăn nuôi sẽ giúp bà con làm việc dễ dàng “mất chi phí ban đầu nhưng hiệu quả về sau” bắt kịp xu hướng hiện nay.
Thứ 2 đó là máy ép cám viên, nếu chỉ trộn thông thường đàn bò sẽ không tiêu thụ hết thức ăn, thức ăn còn sót cũng không bảo quản được lâu gây lãng phí.
